Car Battery Installation Method
Car battery replacement is one of the most common services in the automotive industry, and it is increasingly treated as a job for trained professionals. Modern vehicles contain sensitive electronics that can be disrupted by careless handling, so a structured installation process protects both the car and the person doing the work.
Before you start
- Confirm the correct battery specification for the vehicle (group size, voltage, terminal layout and cold cranking rating).
- Switch off the ignition and all electrical loads, and remove metal jewellery.
- Have the correct tools and, where fitted, a memory saver to preserve vehicle settings.
Removing the old battery
Disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive terminal, to avoid short circuits. Remove the hold-down bracket and lift the battery out without tilting it excessively. Inspect the tray and terminals for corrosion.
Installing the new battery
Place the new battery and secure the hold-down bracket. Connect the positive terminal first, then the negative terminal, and tighten both to the specified torque. Apply terminal protection where recommended.
After installation
Start the vehicle and confirm the charging system operates correctly. Relearn any vehicle systems that need it, such as power windows or the clock, and dispose of the old battery through a recycling channel.
